School update: Progress!

August 26, 2009 · 2 Comments

Thanks to everyone who commented here as well as sent me offline emails with their helpful suggestions for preventing (or minimizing!) the after school drama.  We have tried a number of things and they appear to be working.

Today I arrived home from a business trip before he went to school (yes, took the crack of dawn flight so I could be home for the school drop off!).  When I dropped him off, they were already in circle talking about what they were going to do today — and they were going to be discussing vegetables.  He got out of my arms and started shouting “corn! corn!” — the boy loves his corn!  He waved bye, blew me a kiss and went on about his day.  I was pleased.

When I picked him up, they were outside playing in the playground.  He came over to me, gave me a big hug, waved goodbye to his friends, gave his teachers a “Peace Out” (his new favorite saying thanks to his daddy) and we headed home.

Once home, we read a bunch of books together on our reading chair, talked about his day, and what we were having for dinner.  As I cooked, he played in the Tupperware cabinet (who needs toys?).  We had a nice dinner, followed by a shower, more books, a little rocking and singing, and finally bedtime.

I'd like to blame the lack of organization on the kid but it would be a lie. As Kelly says, don't judge me.

I am breathing a sigh of relief for now.  I know all the days won’t be like this but I feel a sense of accomplishment for all of us that our day turned out drama free!

School begins…

…subtitled, “Some days you just need a cookie.”

For those of you BTDT, please let me know if you have experienced what you are about to read below — please feel free to send me advice!  I’ve learned much from my blogger buddies and now is the time to weigh in with your suggestions!

So, the boy started “school” this week and so far, so good — sort of.   He does freak out a bit when I drop him off but having worked in daycare myself in college, I know how the drop off drill unfolds.   When I come to pick him up, he is excited to see me and equally excited to tell me about his day — fingerpainting, apple juice, outside, nap, etc.

When we arrived home yesterday, we had a quick snack and ran over to visit the neighbors as their son is going back to college and we wanted to say goodbye.  Upon returning home after that brief visit, he had A MELTDOWN!  Yes, emphasis on the capital letters.   I chalked it up to keeping it together all day at school and then finally releasing all the emotions now that he was home — plus he was hungry.

So, I did as I have been reading about where there is “Time in” rather than “Time out” — and for us that consisted of me holding him and rocking on his rocking chair while he wails and I softly sing, telling him that everything is okay.  Yesterday this lasted about 30 minutes and life got back to normal.

Today’s drop off went about the same.  He was excited for school until we got to the building and then he started with “no school mama, home, new car, go home….”  And we talked about how much fun he had yesterday and all the things he did.  I made it through drop off (okay, admittedly my heart breaking a bit as I heard him crying) and went to work.  I decided today to avoid the hunger issue today and slice up an apple and take that for the car ride home.  It worked…for awhile.

When we got home, he excitedly told me all about his day, singing, jumping, more painting, apple juice, etc.   He watched a show while I made dinner and then I sat him in his booster seat to eat.  At that time, he picked up his cup of milk (we are working on minimizing the sippy cups…) and THREW IT ACROSS THE ROOM!  Wow…and then the wailing began.

Covered in milk, I quickly undressed him and rinsed him off in the shower (yes, assume the wailing continues throughout this process…) and wrapped him in a towel and back to the rocking chair we went.    We had the same “time in” with the rocking and singing and that lasted about 20 minutes.  He finally calmed down and I put his pajamas on him and he wanted to rock some more.  We did this for another few minutes until he decided he was ready to eat and said, “sorry mama…” about the milk.

We went out to the kitchen and as he sat down to eat, happily now, I decided it was just one of those days that we needed a cookie…and then I remembered the “stash” my mother in law made when she was here.  She makes these amazing chocolate chip, oatmeal, peanut butter things that are to die for.  Before she left, she made us a batch and baked them but then also froze the cookie dough so that we could “bake at a later date…” and I did.

Carter and I ended our day with a homemade cookie from Mamere, and loved every last bite!  Fingers crossed for shorter crying in the days to come…I’m headed on a work trip and hubby will get his first taste of the after school routine!

Six months!

August 15, 2009 · 1 Comment

It still just blows my mind to think that we have been a family for 6 months!  That’s half a year!  Wow, time is really flying by.  I can’t believe how much Carter has changed in those six months either.  Here are a few milestones we have hit by the 6 month mark:

  • He weighs a whopping 26 lbs as of his doctor appointment last week and has moved from a 12 month pant size to an 18 month pant size
  • His vocabulary has taken off, and he speaks in sentences most of the time
  • He can put on his own socks and shoes
  • He still regularly naps 2 hours every afternoon and sleeps 12 hours straight through the night
  • He continues to eat everything we put in front of him and requests chicken on a regular basis
  • He can now ride his bike by pedaling rather than the old “Fred Flintstone” method with his feet
  • He talks on the phone and regularly requests that we call “Pop pop” and “Austin”
  • He continues to amaze us daily and bring us more joy than we could have ever imagined!

Here’s to the next 6 months and beyond!  We continue to learn new things every day, including patience!  Carter starts “school” on Monday and I know he is going to be excited to be around kids all day; I am looking forward to the vocabulary he will come home with as well.

Beach fun!

August 10, 2009 · 1 Comment

We spent a long weekend with our friends in Myrtle Beach and had the best time.   It is great to have friends with kids close in age to Carter that we can vacation with.  It worked out well and we all had a great time and fantastic weather.  Here are a few of my favorite shots from the weekend.

Catching up post #2: Austin’s visit

August 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I didn’t mean to cut the Brown girls’ blog short but for some reason, even after deleting and re-adding, it wouldn’t let me add any more.  Let’s see how this post turns out.

Our nephew Austin was here for a few days.  He is a teenager – time is really flying.  He’s a fun kid who likes to act, dance, and sing and Carter loved every minute of their visit.  He still asks for “Autin”  (yes, without the S).  He misses him so much we finally called him on the phone today so he could say hello.  We had a great visit and we look forward to this every summer!

Austin, thanks for coming to visit!  We are so proud of you for all that you do and the wonderful person you are.  I suspect next year since you will be old enough it may be time for Andrew to start coming down with you!

Catching up: Brown girls visit!

August 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I am woefully behind in my blog posts.  Rather than one big blog to catch everyone up, I am going to do a few over the next few days to catch you up.  The first catch up blog is about our visit from the Brown girls.  I nannied for the Brown family when I was in college.  Their oldest daughter was here for a visit in July and now her two sisters paid us a visit a few weeks ago.  It was a short trip but Carter had a great time getting to know them.  He was actually MAD AT ME when I dropped them off at the airport.  I told him they had to go home and he said, “NO!”

Wow, it has been 5 years already….

July 11, 2009 · 3 Comments

Yesterday we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary and it was great.  We had a nice dinner out while Carter stayed home with the sitter.  It was nice to go to a table cloth restaurant for a change.    Thanks honey for 5 AMAZING years of marriage.  I love you more every day and I can’t imagine taking this journey of life and parenthood with anyone other than you.

One of my favorite wedding photos

One of my favorite wedding photos

We were married in a lovely garden at the Marriott in Lihue, Hawaii on the island of Kauai.  We had only 4 guests.  We “eloped” on my parent’s anniversary.  It wasn’t as bad as it sounds as they eloped on that very day too a mere 39 years prior!  We figured if it worked for them, it would work for us too.

We were laughing at dinner about having to make the call home to our families with the news.  When I called my parents, my mom was not home so I asked my dad to relay the message.  His response still cracks me up.  He said, “Heck no, you have to call back when she is home and deliver it yourself!”   So I did call back and deliver the same message a little while later.

All in all, we did it our way and it was awesome.  Happy Anniversay dear hubby, and happy 44th anniversary to you too Mom and Dad, thanks for sharing your date with us!

Coming full circle…

July 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I used to babysit for Naomi and her sisters when I was in college and we have remained close ever since.  Now, Naomi just graduated college (okay, cue the GASP!) and is in Teach for America.  She has been in training at Georgia Tech and has taken time out of her very busy schedule to hang out with us old folks and a cute kid.  She came over on Saturday for lunch and I snapped a few photos during her visit.  Hard to believe I was hanging out with her when she was this age!

Not sure who was more excited, Carter or Maddy

We had a great time with Naomi on our all too brief visit!  We are so proud of you!  We are also looking forward to her sister’s visit in a few weeks!  I will post photos from their visit as well!

Happy 4th of July!

July 4, 2009 · 4 Comments

We had a fun 4th of July introducing Carter to some local and some family traditions.  Namely, the Peachtree Road Race and grilling.  Hubby had to work so Carter and I hit the streets to cheer our friends and neighbors as they ran the Peachtree Road Race (10K) along with 55,000 other runners.  We met my friend Margaret and other friends on the route and Carter got his first taste of a Krispy Kreme glazed donut.  He loved every bite!

After the road race, we headed to a few Goodwill stores as I am looking for a chest of drawers to refinish for Carter’s room.  At the first store we went to, Carter spotted a toy that he really wanted to have.  It was $3.00 so I bought him a “First 4th of July” present.  Here he is giving it a try.

Hubby got home from work early so we decided to grill out.  While we were waiting for the grill to heat up, we hung out in the driveway, took some picutres, and participated in one of Carter’s favorite activities — bubbles!
